Representations of Portugal in Memorial de Aires, by Machado de Assis

The aim of this article is to analyze the representations of the Portuguese nation in Memorial de Aires, by Machado de Assis, pointing to the critical view in relation to these representations, which are built in order to show the obsolescence of Portuguese models of the 19th century Brazilian society, which can be also observed in the short-story “A canary’s ideas”, written in 1899. The complex relationships between Brazilian and Portuguese intellectuals in the Brazilian literary scene will be taken into consideration in this analysis, as Machado de Assis was based on the dynamics of these relationships to develop his critical view in relation to the Portuguese cultural heritage, also mentioned in his chronicles of the series entitled “Bons Dias”, published between the years of 1888 and 1889.
