Abstract

In the novel Maina Mendes, by Maria Velho da Costa, some female characters are repeatedly compared to animals. In this essay, we make a survey of some of these approximations between women and animals, seeking to reflect on their association with Maina and Cecily’s search for freedom, and their consequent resistance to the traditional role of women. This reflection is made within the scope of some feminist texts, using the concepts of Subject and Other, seeking the affirmation of difference through the creation of other ways of being, despite the incomprehension, and the consequent threat, that difference can cause in the patriarchal society.
